From the Mimika area -south coast West Papua. Local name: Yamate.
In the villages located inland at the upper reaches of rivers, the most important feast is Emakame (literally: bone house). Shields, Yamate, are used in the Emakame ritual. The carving of the shields symbolises life and death and the genesis of life out from the death. Essentially, Yamate are ancestral figures; they each represent a recently deceased fellow villager.
