Top class icon from Northern Russia, probably from Novgorod, north of Moscow. It depicts the Baptism of Jesus, a frequent subject in the Icons of the Holidays but rare as a single subject on a table. Jesus is immersed in the Jordan River with his arms crossed over his chest as he receives Baptism from the hands of St. John the Baptist. Above his head is depicted the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. On the right side, three Angels hold white cloths to dry Jesus. The icon is in excellent condition except for a slight crack of the board that does not damage images and colours and except a slight vertical colour loss on the hair of St. John. At the bottom, on the outer edge, there is a trace left by a candle burning, lit out of devotion. No restorations of any kind.
Dimensions: height 35.5 cm; width 30.5 cm.
