Son of Adolphe Verbeke, Gerard Verbeke was ordained a priest on 28 April 1935. From 1946 to 1978 he was a professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven.
He got a magister degree in philosophy at the University of Leuven and soon became a professor there. He also became an honorary canon of the St Salvatorskapittel in Bruges.
He became a member and Permanent Secretary of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten. After it was separated from the University of Leuven, he remained a professor at the University of Leuven and a professor extraordinarius at the Université catholique de Louvain.
He received honorary degrees in Milan (1975), Washington (1981) and Ireland (1987). In 1958 he published a fundamental work on the meaning of stoicism for Saint Augustine.
The statue is in excellent condition with very minor signs of old age.
This beautiful and rare statue is made of plaster.
It comes from Belgium.
Period circa 1930 - 1950.
The statue is 33 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 10 cm deep.
