Sculpture, groupe sculptural représentant Diana et Endymion - Baroque - Terre cuite - XVIIIe siècle

Description
Sculpture, groupe sculptural représentant Diana et Endymion - Baroque - Terre cuite - XVIIIe siècle
Flandre

A museum-quality terra-cotta sculptural group depicting the story of Diana and Endymion, showing the Roman goddess Diana falling in love with Endymion, a symbol of timeless beauty. Diana is depicted naked in the sky, surrounded by cherubs and clouds, while observing the handsome Endymion who is asleep against the bottom of a tree.

Possibly, this terra-cotta group was a so-called "bozetto", a model or project for a larger sculpture, usually made to show patrons what the end result would roughly look like, as well as to help artists work out their ideas.

Flemish Baroque. Antwerp. 18th century.

Provenance:
According to the previous owner this sculpture was purchased from collection Van Herck Collection, comprising of more than 700 drawings and 110 terracotta objects dating from between the 17th & 19th centuries. They are above all preparatory works for monumental sculptures and sculpted ornamental church furniture, made by artists from the Southern Netherlands and particularly from the Antwerp region. Collected by the Antwerp art merchant Charles Van Herck (1884–1955).
