An elaborate tobacco pipe bowl made out of clay and decorated with a human face modelled in the Bamun style from Cameroon. Elaborate pipes such as this are common among the Bamun and their neighbours and are prestige objects used by the King Fon and his dignitaries. Its form and designs are shared by various ethnic groups in Cameroon.

West African pipes come in a variety of forms: simple with geometric motifs, symbolic with human and animal images. They decorate their pipes with geometric patterns. Many other pipes are made out from wood and come in variety of symbolic (human and animal) forms. Chiefs' pipes are somehow the most decorated ones. They are used by men and women to smoke tobacco. Tobacco grown in the Americas was smoked as early as the middle of the 17th century with smoking pipes based upon European models.
