These are two very beautiful cotton Zulu hats, which are made with great care and dedication.
The one with the white decoration is from the Msingha district on the Tugela River.
The other hat comes from the region of Nongoma in the north of Kwazulu.
These hats were part of the dowry and were given to the woman by the man.
They were smeared with ochre, to protect against the sun.
These hats were worn by women of a lower position.
I acquired these hats in situ around 1974.
