Van Basten, a three-time European football player of the year and two-time world football player of the year, is recognized worldwide as one of the best football players of all time. The former striker was prized for his ball control, technique, tactical class and way of rounding. During his active career he mostly made name for himself while playing for Ajax and AC Milan. The striker won three Dutch titles and the Europe Cup II while playing for Amsterdam. He retired from the Dutch public in 1987 and continued his career in Italy at AC Milan. There he played a role in winning some great trophies, including twice the Europe Cup I, two world cups and twice the UEFA Super Cup.
Van Basten became European champion with the Dutch national football team in West-Germany in 1988. The goal Van Basten scored in the final against the Soviet Union is still seen by football fans as one of the most memorable goals ever.
Van Basten retired early from professional football due to a serious ankle injury at the age of 30 on August 17, 1995. At the time, he had not played for nearly two and a half years since his last match against Olympique Marseille in the final of the Champions League.
