Ancient Greek Gold Alexander Applique - (1)

An applique, of round shape, depicting, in profile, the head of Alexander the Great. Four equally spaced holes around the perimeter for attachment. 3rd Century B.C. 1.27 cm in diameter. Strung on a modern, 14K, 18 inch or 45 cm gold chain. For similar, see Ancient Greek and Roman Gold Jewelry In The Brooklyn Museum, by Patricia F. Davidson and Andrew Oliver Jr., #'s 225-237. A similar pair of Hellenistic appliques were sold at the Christies Jewelry auction, in December, 2006, Lot # 241, inserted as a central element in modern gold earrings.
